24 August 2005 - In Support of Cindy Sheehan-NOT Dear Editor, Perhaps it would be a mark of wisdom for Barbara Burns to go back and tend to the Outlook. I think she is way over her head when it comes to politics and international affairs. Like so many folks today who are hypnotized by sound bites, Barbara appears to have failed to thoroughly research her column and has relied on emotion and hearsay. Her article, "In Support of Cindy Sheehan," [O-N-E, August 22, 2005, pg. 4] totally missed the mark, due either to bias or misinformation. She quotes Peter Beinart and refers to him as guest scholar at the Brookings Institute. Perhaps readers would recognize him better if referred to him by his proper title, Editor of the New Republic, an ultra-leftist magazine. As for the latest charge by the far-left, that Bush supporters will try to "swiftboat" Cindy Sheehan, that's a laugh. Regardless of the leftist media's forum, the facts speak for themselves: 1. On April 27, 2005, Cindy Sheehan spoke in support of Lynn Stewart at a rally at San Francisco University. She shouted: "The biggest terrorist in the world is George W. Bush." It might be noted that Lynn Stewart was the lawyer convicted of passing terrorist-related information to convicted Al-Qaeda mastermind, Omar Abdel-Rahman, engineer of the truck bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993 and close friend of Osama Bin-Lauden. 2. In June, 2004, two months after the death of her son, Casey, she met with President Bush. She described the meeting as "one of the most disgusting experiences I ever had" Perhaps President Bush thought, "Fool me once, that's your fault. Fool me twice, that's my fault." 3. Sheehan is as passionately anti-Israel as she is pro-Palestinian. 4. She refers to President as the "Führer and his administration as "neo-cons." She implicates our military as "terrorists" and their mission as "genocide." 5. She refers to the elimination of the Taliban in Afghanistan by saying, "it was wrong to invade an entire country to fight an ideology that did not necessarily represent all of the people of that country." 6. This woman further claims "America has been killing people on this continent since it was started. This country is not worth dying for." And she really expects the President of the United States to meet with her? Give me a break! Please insist that Barbara Burns spend more time researching before publishing. For now, I will give her the benefit of the doubt in the hope that she was misinformed and lacked necessary information about Ms. Sheehan. Knowing that she deliberately attempted to ignore Sheehan's radical background is more than the readers could possibly expect. Derick S.
