10 March 2005 - Bleeding Hearts Thwart Justice My blood seethes when I learn of barbaric attacks against members of the justice and law enforcement community. These assaults against society go beyond our human comprehension. For any uncivilized piece of human filth to take the lives of these officials is an attack on the very foundation of our civilization. These vicious animals deserve to be declared outlaws, which is what they are. I'm sure many fellow North Carolinians remember back when there was a NC law that provided for a dangerous felon to be declared an "Outlaw." This law allowed for citizens to apprehend or kill a declared outlaw without the threat of criminal or civil penalty. With the help of the ACLU and others, this law was ruled to be unconstitutional. Are we now to become a third-world country, like Columbia and Iraq, where the legally constituted authorities are targets of fiendish murderers? When these animals are brought to justice, our legal system provides for a penalty to be exacted. More and more, the convicted felon is sentenced to a lifetime of free room and board, clothing and medical care. Yet every death sentence is met with a plea for mercy from the misguided bleeding-hearts. Most of us wonder why their efforts are not directed more toward the victims (and their families) and less to those who murdered them. A recent series of letters to the editor were sent on behalf of William Powell, urging readers to help spare his life. The truth be known, Powell was a vicious human being. From 1986 to 1995, 197 convicts murdered a police officer while they were out on parole, probation, or early prison release. More than 100 police killers during that period were under 18 years of age. That latter group can not be executed for their heinous crimes, according to a recent Supreme Court decision. The dumb (IQ under 70) can't be executed because they aren't "smart enough" to commit murder. What's wrong with this picture? Our civilization is at a crossroads. When we fail to make the sentence fit the crime we have allowed the criminal element to control us. God's law has always allowed for the execution of murderers. Any other interpretation of the Bible is gross intellectual dishonesty. Derick S. Hartshorn Conover, NC
