Dear Editor, The gentleman who wrote the HDR, (Mon. Nov. 18,2007) suggesting that conservatives should back Mitt Romney, left a lot out of his letter. He failed to quote Joseph Smith, founder of the LDS that God told him that all Christian churches were "wrong and all their creeds were an abomination in [God's] sight..." I guess that includes Methodists, Presbyterians, Baptists and other Christians that Mr. Smithy hopes will support Mr. Romney. Since the LDS church believes in a celestial heaven reserved specifically for their chosen LDS adherents, that might pose a problem for saved Christians. As for the historical context of the Book of Mormon, it has been refuted by reputable archeologists and, more strikingly, by DNA. The theological teachings of the Book of Mormon even conflict with LDS teachings. And yet, the "Prophet, Seer and Revelator," Joseph Smith, claimed it to be "the most correct book on the whole earth..." (including the Bible). Many have said that religion should not play a part in the election. But I wonder if Christians would support a candidate who believes God, the creator of the universe was once a mortal man and that LDS can all become gods like Him one day. Lest I be accused of being misinformed, I was once a Mormon myself. I attended priesthood classses and was told "...If we get our salvation, we shall have to pass by him [Joseph Smith]." Only in the last ten years did the LDS claim they were Christians. Before that they were proud NOT to embrace that claim. If believers want to throw their support behind someone who believes God lives on a planet named Kolob and that the LDS church is "... the only true and living church upon the face of the whole earth...," that's their business.
