After
his father was killed in his presence, he was taken prisoner,
along with a young friend. Warren Ladd describes it: "They
then started for Penacock, where they arrived with the two
boys. Young Ladd soon grew weary of his situation and one
night after his Indian master and family had fallen asleep, he
attempted to escape. He had proceeded but a short distance,
when he thought that he should want a hatchet to fell trees and
assist him in crossing streams. He then returned, entered a
wigwam near his master's, where an old squaw lay sick, and took a
hatchet. The squaw watched his movements and thinking that
he was going to kill her
she screamed
loudly. This wakened the Indians in the wigwam, who
instantly arose, re-captured him and delivered him again to his
master, who bound his hands, laid him upon his back, fasted one
of his feet to a tree, and in that manner kept him fourteen
nights. They then gashed his face with their knives, filled
the wounds with powder and kept him on his back until it was so
indented in the flesh that it was impossible to extract it.
He carried the scars to his grave, and is now frequently spoken
of by his descendents as the "marked man."

NOTES (from above):
(1) My 5 x great-grandparents. Married
in Church Puverbatch, Shropshire, England on November 13, 1743.
No other dates yet found. Also had another daughter, Catherine /
Katharine(1762-????) and probably other children too but none of
these (yet) traced.
(2) My 4 x great-grandmother. Baptised on March 12, 1758 at Church Pulverbatch, Shropshire. Judith was born illegimately, prior to Esther's marriage to William Dod(d) (c1750?-1822?), which took place on October 13, 1784 at Pontesbury, Shropshire. Esther died in Horsehay, Shropshire and was buried on February 2, 1823 at Dawley Magna, Shropshire.
(3) My 3 x great-grandmother. Judy was
baptised on November 9, at Wo(o)lstaston, Sal. She married John
on October 15. 1806 in St. Mary's, Shrewsbury, Shropshire. Both
the banns book and the parish register incorrectly show her
surname as "Archent". Ten known children. Judith died
on 26 July 1861 in Horsehay, Shropshire and was buried on July
29, 1861 at Dawley Magna, Shropshire.
(Exact dates and places are available for most of the later
entries if these are required.)
I am in touch with three other descendants of Judith Hartshorn and John Pinches. Two of these are in Australia and the other one is also in England. Hopefully someone will recognise one (or more) of our Hartshorn names and will contact me!

Comments: I presume
the Thomas b. 1723 is the Thomas born in Arnold Notts, but have
not proved it conclusively yet. Thomas married in Basford, but
after searching the Basford registers I cannott find any mention
of Hartshorn pre the marriage entry to Mary Adkinson.
William 1748 served in
army for 50 years. The 5th of Foot regiment then the volunteers.
William 1810 served for
approx 50 years with the 24th Foot regiment. He was married twice.
The first time in Montreal Canada to Mary Walsh, where they had
two sons, William in 1838 and John in 1840. There is no further
record of these two sons other than the mention of their birth in
the army records. I presume they died in Canada. This is the
William who was granted a coat of arms by the Heralds which has
been mentioned in the group messages.
I have lots of
interesting information gleaned from the service records of both
Williams and intend to put it on a web page one day.
