The Domesday Book was commissioned in December 1085 by William the Conqueror, who invaded England in 1066. The first draft was completed in August 1086 and contained records for 13,418 settlements in the English counties south of the rivers Ribble and Tees (the border with Scotland at the time).
An extract from the Domesday Book (80, 274, 3, 2) provides the following on one Aluricus (Aluric), a landowner in the village of Hartshorn in Derbyshire in AD 1086, during the time of the Great Survey. The two manors that he held were located in the wapentake of Walecross from Henricus de Ferieres (Henry Ferras). The location agrees with research done by my great grandfather, Newton Timothy Hartshorn as they are in the present parishes of the hundreds of Repton and Gressly where the village and parish of Hartshorn is located, about three miles NNW of Ashby de la Zouche.
“MANOR: In HEORTESHORNE (Hartshorn) Aluricus had four carucates (ploughlands) of land for geld (taxable.) Land (enough) for four ploughs. It is waste, pasturable woodland, half-a-mile in length, and half (a mile) in breadth. The same amount of arable land in the time of King Edward (the Confessor) was worth four pounds, now worth ten shillings.”

I was never able to determine the hereditarial assignation of the estate and was forced to accept the fact that no records existed to prove any descent from Aluric. His name, however, seems to indicate the Germanic origin that my great grandfather attributed to the ancient Hartshorns.
Many years ago, I was given a pedigree chart from the late Bertram K. Hartshorne, of Dumfries, Scotland. I never had the opportunity to verify anything on the chart but I believe that the original creator of the chart recorded the generations as he believed them to exist.
