1. Thomas Dudely HARTSHORN was born about 1842 in Champaign Co., Ohio. He enlisted in the Army 1 April 1862 and served in Company D, First Batallion, 13th Infantry Regiment and saw service in the Battles of Chickasaw Bayou (29 Dec 1862), Arkansas Post (11 Jan 1863, Champion Mills (16 May 1863), Vicksburg (17 May 1863), Jackson, (1863), Collierville (11 Oct 1863) and Mission Ridge (24 Nov 1863). He was discharged at the expiration of his enlistment in Nashville, Tenn. on 1 April 1865, his character was described as "excellent" by his commander, R.S. LaMotte. Thomas was described as five foot, five inches tall and having a fair complexion, with grey eyes and light hair. His occupation at enlistment was that of farmer. His discharge was made on sheepskin which is thought to convey a special significance.
