John Hartshorn, a native of Shropshire, England, the father
of Thomas the emigrant, never came to America. His son arrived during the
1850s and distinguished himself in selfless service during the Civil War
even though he was well in his middle years. The family settled in Perrysburg,
Lucas county, Ohio, with some later moving westward.
