Charles Oren HARTSHORN was born about 1878. Resided
in Moberly, Mo.; worked on Wabash RR. Charles Oren HARTSHORN and Alta were

Jr. was born on 7 Jun 1913. He died on 10 Jul 1991 in Oklahoma
City, Oklahoma. HARTSHORN Charles "Charlie" O., born June
7, 1913, passed away Wednesday July 10th, 1991 at the age of 78. He had been
a resident of Oklahoma City for the past 40 years. Before he and his late wife,
Lela O. Hartshorn, had moved to Oklahoma City, he had been associated with Boys
Town of Missouri and the American Red Cross in Kansas City and St. Louis. He
had retired from the American Red Cross in 1978, after 47 years as the Director
of Water Safety and First Aid Programs and Disaster Services Coordinator before
retiring from the Oklahoma County Chapter of the American Red Cross. He was known
to many as "Mr. Red Cross" in Oklahoma because of many hours dedicated
to teaching water safety and first aid. He had attained many great achievements
in his lifetime, some being his winning of a Silver Medal in U.S. Olympic tryouts
for the 1932 World Olympics in swimming, being made Honorary Chief of the Oklahoma
City Fire Department, the Oklahoma City Police Department and the Warr Acres
Police Department. One of his greatest pleasures was being active in the training
of the Oklahoma City Fire Department, the Oklahoma City Police Department and
the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. His friendship with the Oklahoma City Fire Department
was always one of his most cherished. He often would go to multiple alarm fires
or drownings to aid the firemen with first aid and whatever needed to be done
for the victims and their families. In 1978, he was made a life member of Retired
Oklahoma City Firefighters Association. He was preceded in death by his wife
of 58 years, Lela O. Hartshorn.
He is survived by a foster daughter, Rosemary Featherly and her husband, Fritz
Featherly, a grandson, Trey Featherly, all of Yukon; one sister, Marie Armstrong
of Madison, Mo.; two nephews, Charles Thompson of Nevada and Bill Levin of Missouri;
and a host of other nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, July 12th, in the chapel at Hahn-Cook/Street
& Draper Funeral Home with interment following the services at Resurrection
