44. Benjamin
Wellington HARTSHORN was born about 1853 in Delphos, Allen, Ohio.
He appeared in the census enumerated in 1880 in Clay, Marion, Iowa.
He died in 1938. Benjamin W. Hartshorn was a farmer in Tracy, Iowa.
He lived in Bigelow, Kansas for a time and went to San Francisco after the earthquake
of 1906 to work in the rebuilding of the city. While there, he remarried, according
to family stories, a rich widow with three daughters. He returned east to Moberly,
Missouri, to the home of his son, Earl after an absence of over thirty years. Benjamin
Wellington HARTSHORN and Martha Ellen RUPLE were married on 23 Jul 1876.
Martha Ellen RUPLE (daughter of [unk. father of Mary
Ellen] RUPLE) was born on 8 Oct 1858 in Tracy, Marion, Iowa. She
died on 2 Nov 1899 in Tracy, Marion, Iowa. She was buried on 8 Nov
1899 in Bellefontaine Cemetery, Tracy, Iowa. MRS. B. W. HARTSHORN
Tracy, [IA] Nov. 6, -Died, at her home near Tracy at four o'clock a. m.,
Nov. 2, 1899, Mrs. Martha Hartshorn, at the age of 43 years and 20 days.
Martha E. Ruple was born Oct. 8, 1858, near Tracy, and has resided in this
community all her live. She was married to B. W. Hartshorn, July 23, 1876.
To this union were born four sons, who were all privileged to be at home when
the mother passed beyond.
Deceased has been a member of the M. E. church since her youth, and by her
life adorned her profession of faith.
For twenty years she has been in poor health, and at times in intense pain,
but she bore it all with Christian fortitude and resignation. She was a loving
wife, a devoted mother, and was held in high esteem by her friends. Her parents
and tree sisters have preceded her to the spirit land, while her husband and
four sons survive to cherish the memory of a Christian wife and mother.
The funeral sermon was preached by her pastor, Samuel Thero, in the church
at Tracy, in the presence of a large congregation of sympathetic friends. The
Rebekah sisterhood conducted ritual services at her grave in Bellefontaine cemetery,
where she rests in peace until the earth and sea shall give up their dead. (11-8-1899-unnamed
