9. Nathan
Walker HARTSHORN MD was born on 20 Jan 1822 in Knox County, Ohio.
He died on 13 Nov 1901 in Ney, Defiance, Ohio. Obituary: Dr. Nathan
W. Hartshorn was born in Know Co. O., January 20, 1822 and died Nov. 13, 1901
in Ney, Ohio, aged 79 years, 9 months and 24 days.
A stalworth and prominent citizen has passed away. His history is associated
with vast developements and progress in this part of the state. He moved to
Allen county with is parents when four years of age and brought up near Lima.
He moved to Putnam county on the Blanchard River in 1856, and from there he
moved to Georgetown, now Ney, Defiance county, 1862 where he has since reside.
He was married to Jane Mason in 1840 and for almost sixty years they labored
together, rearing their family amassing their estate, and contributing to society
their quota of good deeds, and inspiration of worthy thought and high aspirations.
He was again married on the twenty thired day of March, 1901 to Emiline Garver,
who survives him to mourn his loss.
At the age of twenty years he began the practice of medicine first in Peru,
Ind., and was well known as a practioner throughout Williams and Defiance counties.
He was also a public officer having served as Justice of the Peace in Washington
township Defiance county and also as Mayor of Ney.
In his early life, when nine years old, he joined the Methodist Episcopal
church in Allen Co., at Bluelick Bethel church, and his life ever since has been
closely identified with religion and the church of his choice. He has been a
local preacher in the church for over fifty years, feeling the call to preach
when as young as ten years and one of the regrets of his life was that he did
not enter the "effective relation" and become an itinerant minister,
giving his whole time and energy to the church. He was noted in his earlier
life as a revivalist, gracious revivals of religion breaking out under his labors.
He was raised a Methodist, and as they moved from place to place, one of their
first efforts was to provide a house of worship.
We recognize in Dr. Hartshorn a man of marked and strong personality.
His intellectuality was marked. His convictions were positive. His influence
and success were distinguished. It is sad to note the passing of a man whose
life, attainment and service have meant so much to the community in which he
had cast his lot. Like the felling of a sturdy oak, he, who stood for truth and
religion, for the church, for the service of human needs, for good citizenship,
has been brought low in death. The funeral services were held at the M. E. church
at Ney at ten o'clock Friday morning Nov. 15, 1901. The funeral sermon was preached
by the Rev. C. R. davenport, after which the body was laid to rest in the Ney
cemetery. [Bryan Press Thurs Nov 21, 1901 pg 7]
