J. Harold Spence, 91. 33222 Back St., Lewisville. died Friday. Feb. 26, 1999
in Good Samaritan Medical Center, Zanesville. He was born near Graysville, Jan.
28. 1908, a son of the late John and Ida Hartshorn Spence.
He was a retired maintenance worker at the former Conalco Corp. Hannibal, a member
of Hartshorn Ridge Church of Christ near Graysville. a member of the American
Legion Post 87 at Woodsfield, oldest living veteran in Monroe County, and an
Army veteran of World War II.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers. Denver,
Floyd and Vernon Spence: two sisters. Gail Suittor and Audrey Bates.
Surviving are his wife. Phyllis Weber Spence; several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Watters Funeral Home. 37501 Ohio 78 West, Woodsfield,
from noon until time of services at 2 p.m. Monday. with Pastor Don Arbuckle officiating.
Burial follows in Friendship Cemetery. Lewisville. with full military graveside
service: conducted by the Belmont County Veterans Council.

Not all veterans served overseas during World War II. Some served their country
supporting services on the homefront. Harold Spence of Lewisville is one of these.
Spence is believed to be Monroe County's oldest veteran. He will celebrate his
91st birthday anniversary on Jan. 28.
From 1942 to 1945, a corporal in the U.S. Air Force, Spence served as a postal
clerk at Maxwell Field, Alabama and at Nashville, Tennessee. He was ordered to
Spokane, Washington in 1945 for extensive training to be deployed overseas, but
when Japan surrendered he was discharged. "They sent the old men home,"
said Spence, who was then 38 years old. He was discharged Oct, 23, 1945.
Spence said while he was postal clerk at Maxwell Field, Major Louis Egger of
Woodsfield, a pilot at the time, was stationed there. He said he put a note in
Egger's mailbox. "Louis was so happy to see someone from his hometown area,"
said Spence.
Originally from the Graysville area, Spence and his wife Phyllis have been married
for 54 years.
He retired from Conalco in 1976. Previously, he worked for Scott Lumber in several
locations and was an oilfield worker.
Spence and Phyllis are in good health and enjoying retirement.
