He was buried on 14 May 1934 in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Newark, Ohio. He served in the military. Martin D. Hartshorn was born in the walnut log cabin rented by his father. He joined the army, entering Company C of the 135th Ohio Volunteer Infantry for service in the civil war, mustering in 2 May 1864. His term of enlistment was just 100 days, at the expiration on 1 Sept 1864, he returned home. He married Flavia Laird who came from a family that had made the journey from Johnstown, Pennsylvania by way of the Ohio and Erie Canal. Martin's inlaws were ardent Methodists, Mr. Laird being licensed to "exhort" during the absence of the circuit-riding minister. Martin and his brother, Charles, formed a partnership and ran their farms together with the help of their nine sons. Together, they bought a prize winning Shorthorn bull and had a successful business raising and selling registered cattle. Martin's son, Frank, continued in farming and the cattle business until 1902. Frank contracted meningitis and died, forcing Martin to sell much of his large farm. None of the sons or nephews desired to share Martin's labor as a farmer and the spread was reduced to the size that he and a tenant farmer could manage. Martin Daniel HARTSHORN and Flavia Henrietta
