2. James Henry HARTSHORN was born on 6 Oct 1797 in Kent County, Delaware. He died on 4 Jul 1883 in Moscow, Clermont, Ohio.1 86y He was buried in Wesleyan Cemetery, Cincinnati, Ohio. (Sec F, Lot 34) James Henry Hartshorn is known to have worked in a glass factory in Cincinnati between 1823 and 1830, at which time he became a hotel keeper. He owned land in Clermont County as early as 1828, part of John McDugal's survey #1684 and 391. He sold #1683 and #1684 in July, 1848 (Vol. 49 p 450) and #391 in 1865 (Vol. 83). He was a resident of Hamilton during the time of his 1848 sale. The 1850 census lists his occupation as a drayman. He was a member of the Methodist-Episcopal church.

James Henry HARTSHORN and Sarah DAVIES were married about 1822. Sarah DAVIES was born on 13 Jul 1804 in New Jersey. She died on 22 May 1867 in Clermont County, Ohio.2 age 63y She was buried in Wesleyan Cemetery, Cincinnati, Ohio. James Henry HARTSHORN and Sarah DAVIES had the following children:

Wesley R. HARTSHORN4 was born on 21 Apr 1841 in Clermont County, Ohio. He died on 14 Sep 1862 in Cumberland, Allegany, Maryland.5 age 21 y 5m. He was buried in Wesleyan Cemetery, (Sec F, Lot 34), Cincinnati, Ohio. He served in the military in the Civil War. Wesley R. Hartshorn first enlisted 20 April 1861 as a private. He mustered into Co. C, 6th Ohio Vol. Infantry Regmt. and was mustered out 21 Aug 1861. His subsequent enlistmentment was on 29 May 1862 as corporal in Co. G, 84th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, 10 Jun 1862. On September 12, 1862, "Delta," Company A, 84th Ohio Infantry, Camp Lawrence, Cumberland, Maryland. He died two days later.

History
Organized for three months service June 7, 1862, under Colonel Wm. Lawrence, it at once took the field in the vicinity of Cumberland, Md., where it sent out detachments against guerrilla bands. In September it moved to New Creek, where it occupied a fort at that point. The Regiment then returned to Camp Chase, Ohio, where it was mustered out, having served a month over its term of service.

84th Regiment Infantry. Organized at Camp Chase, Ohio, for three months' service May-June, 1862. Ordered to Cumberland, Md., June 11, and provost duty there till September. Attached to Railroad District, Dept. of the Mountains, to July, 1862, and 8th Army Corps, Middle Department, to September. Moved to New Creek September 13 to repel attack on that point by Jenkins and Imboden. Moved to Camp Chase, thence to Camp Delaware, and mustered out October 14, 1862. Lost by disease during service 14 Enlisted men.

LAWRENCE, William jurist, born in Mount Pleasant, Jefferson County, Ohio, 26 June, 1819. He was graduated at Franklin college, Ohio, in 1838, and two years later was admitted to the bar. He was appointed commissioner of bankruptcy for Logan county in 1842, in 1845 prosecuting attorney for the same county, and from 1845 till 1847 was editor and proprietor of the " Logan Gazette," subsequently conducting the "Western Law Journal." He was in the legislature in 1846-'7, in 1848 a member of the state senate, in 1851 was elected reporter for the supreme court of the state, and in 1853 again elected to the state senate, where he advocated and carried bills to quiet land titles. He was elected judge of the court of common pleas for five years in 1856, and re-elected in 1861, but resigned in 1864. He served as colonel of the 84th Ohio regiment at Cumberland and New Creek in 1862, and in 1863 was tendered a United States judgeship in Florida, which he declined. He was then elected to congress from Ohio as a Republican, serving from 4 December, 1865, till 3 March, 1871: and from 1 December, 1873, till 3 March, 1877. he was a delegate to the Philadelphia loyalist convention in 1866, and in 1880 was appointed first comptroller of the United States treasury, which post he resigned, 20 March, 1885. Judge Lawrence is the only one of the first comptrollers whose decisions were regularly published. After his resignation he engaged in the practice of law in Bellefontaine, Ohio, and Washington. In addition to monographs and speeches on political and literary topics, he is the author of " Reports of Decisions of the Supreme Court of Ohio " (Columbus, 1852): "The Treaty Question" (Washington, 1871); "The Law of Religious Societies and Church Corporations" (Philadelphia, 1873-'4); " The Law of Claims against the Government" (Washington, 1875); "The Organization of the Treasury Department of the United States " (1880); and" Decisions of the First Comptroller in the Department of the Treasury of the United States" (6 vols., 1881-'5).

William Lawrence, of Bellefontaine, was Morn at Mount Pleasant, Ohio, June 26, 1819; graduated at Franklin College, Ohio, and afterwards at the Cincinnati Law School; was a reporter for the Columbus State Journal, and subsequently edited the Logan Gazette and the Western Law Monthly; was Bankrupt Commissioner for Logan County in 1842; was Prosecuting Attorney for Logan County in 1845; was a member of the State House of Representatives of Ohio in 1846 and 1847; was a member of the State Senate of Ohio in 1849, 1850, and 1854; was elected Reporter of the Supreme Court of Ohio in 1851; was elected Judge of the Court of Common Pleas in 180, for five years; reelected in 1861, and resigned in 1864; was in the Union army in 1862, as Colonel of the 84th Ohio Volunteers; was appointed United States Judge in Florida in 1863, which he declined to accept; elected to the Thirty-ninth, Fortieth, Forty-first, Forty-third, and Forty-fourth Congresses, as a Republican, and in 1880, appointed First Comptroller of the Treasury.
Mr. Lawrence had the title of LL. D. conferred upon him by the Franklin College of New Athens, Ohio, in 1873.[History of Logan County (OH), article 269]
